Transformation plans for station entrance to Chesterfield town center reach major milestone

The HS2 station masterplan will include a new boulevard for pedestrians and cyclists between the station and Corporation Street, and a new link road between Brimington Road station and Hollis Lane.

Jewson’s move from Spa Lane to Sheffield Road will allow for the construction of a new motorway from Hollis Lane, extending Spa Lane to the station car park.

Council bosses say the link road will form the new southern gateway.

Councilor Tricia Gilby, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, said: “The completion of the new Sheffield Road branch of Jewson marks another positive step forward for our plans to transform the area around Chesterfield station. .

At a consultation event, a number of organizations welcomed the plan, with Chesterfield and the District Civic Society describing it as a “vast improvement”.

The company said in a statement: “Even if the line is not built, Chesterfield is in dire need of a new approach to the station, as it did in 1870, and we believe this scheme is the best. which can be achieved, within the constraints presented, by the railway itself and the Inner Relief Road, which already compete with the river for space in the valley floor at this point.

“We hope this will continue as soon as possible.”

However, campaigners from the Transition Chesterfield group said the plan was a ‘huge missed opportunity’ which risks ‘turning into a white elephant within a few years’.

Chesterfield-based Whittam Cox Architects produced a ‘flyover video’ of the site’s appearance, including office buildings, open public space, a new bridge and water feature and incorporating the North Midland House, Grade II listed.

Government ministers confirmed last November that the high-speed rail link between London and Birmingham will now stop at an East Midlands hub near Nottingham and will not continue to Chesterfield, Sheffield and Leeds.
